  2. Review the Booking tab of the website to get a sense for the various hotel options

  3. Review the rates google document for more details on hotels and pricing

  4. Use the content from these three sources and hotel websites to decide what your budget will be (low/mid/high/lux) for each destination within Kenya (Nairobi/Lamu/Masai Mara/Mount Kenya)

What should I do before filling out the booking form?

  5. Identify what your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice rooms are for each destination (Nairobi/Lamu/Masai Mara/Mount Kenya)

How will the booking process for internal flights and lodging work?

  3. Air Kenya team will reach out to you directly to finalize your flight booking and coordinate payment (deposit due in January)

  4. Each hotel will reach out to you directly to finalize your room booking and coordinate payment (deposit dates vary, refer to rates google document)

COVID

We’ll be monitoring all official recommendations and restrictions over the next months until the wedding. Closer to the time we will communicate any entry requirements on this webpage. We recommend all of our guests be vaccinated before traveling, as we want this to be a safe, fun journey for everyone!

We have negotiated more lenient COVID cancellation policies with many of the hotels. Generally, should you be unable to travel due to COVID-related reasons, you will be entitled to either a refund less a cancellation fee, a credit for future travel, the ability to transfer your booking to any other party (incl. other members of the wedding group who are able to travel). Refer to the rates spreadsheet for detailed cancellation policies by hotel.

Weather

Lamu in March is generally very hot (25-33°C / 77-91°F)

The Masai Mara is generally warm during the day (20-25°C / 68-77°F) but gets cool in the mornings and evenings (down to 14°C / 57°F), so bring layers to keep warm. Similarly, during the day, the Mount Kenya Safari Club (in Nanyuki region), is around 22°C / 72°F and at night can get down to 10°C / 50°F.

March is on the cusp of the rainy season, historically during this month there are generally ~7 rainy days in Lamu, ~15 rainy days in the Masai Mara, and ~15 rainy days at the Mount Kenya Safari Club. It usually rains in the afternoon in the Mara and Mount Kenya.

travel vaccines

At a minimum, the following vaccinations are recommended for travel in Kenya:

  • Routine vaccinations such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough

  • Hepatitis A

  • Typhoid

  • Yellow Fever (optional)

Lamu, Masai Mara, and Mount Kenya are all regions in which malaria is present. CDC recommends travelers take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. It is also best practice to wear insect repellent in the evenings to avoid mosquito bites.

Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication and vaccines you should get in advance of the trip.

Check out this helpful guide and CDC page for more information.

visas

You will need a valid passport, whose expiration date is more than 6 months after your return date. You will also need to apply for a travel visa before entry to Kenya (this is very quick and easy).
